It's hard to imagine a lifestyle more dangerous to your health than one which involves slumping on the couch, staring at the TV, with a bag of chips in one hand and a cigarette dangling from the other. There's so many things wrong with this picture, it's hard to know where to start.

Recent studies have shown that living a sedentary lifestyle can shorten your lifespan. Even if you get regular exercise in other ways, sitting for extended periods of time can increase your chances of a heart attack. While this can be challenging for people whose job requires them to sit all day, it's even worse news for people who are living as couch potatoes.

And what about that bag of chips? Chips are high in fat and sodium, two macronutrients that, in excess quantities lead to high blood sugar and cardiovascular disease. Don't bother replacing the chips with donuts, either. The high sugar content can eventually lead to developing Type 2 diabetes.

Perhaps most dangerous of all is that cigarette. Study after study has proven a link between smoking and an increased risk of a huge variety of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, strokes and a large number of cancers.

What can you do to change this lifestyle?

There's nothing wrong with a little TV from time to time, and there's nothing wrong with the occasional snack. The key here is moderation. Instead of spending hour upon hour in front of the TV, wean yourself down. Don't just park yourself. Get up during the commercials and walk around, or do some sit-ups or push-ups. Make your TV time work for you. Invest in an exercise bike and spend your favorite show working out.

An occasional handful of chips is okay, but it should be part of a diet that is filled with whole, nutritious foods, instead of junk that comes in packages. Make the focus of your diet whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. If you feel the urge to snack, try switching from chips to popcorn -- but hold the butter! Popcorn is a healthy, whole-grain food that is high in fiber.

As you embrace your new, healthier lifestyle and get away from the old couch potato routine, you need to quit smoking. Talk to your doctor about options that can help you, or try over-the-counter methods like patches, gum or lozenges. As challenging as it may seem, quitting smoking is possible. Talk to a friend who has quit and enlist their support. Your life does, in fact, depend on it.
